Shopping Tips For Tall Women

Shopping Tips For Tall Women

As a 6ft tall woman myself, I can easily speak about this topic since I live and breathe this on a daily basis. It can sometimes be extremely hard finding clothes that fit us tall women properly without having to go to a tailor. Especially with today’s trends, they aren’t made for us taller ladies. It’s a hard pill to swallow but it’s the truth, but it’s not a lost cause for us either.

To make our shopping experience fun and enjoyable I’ve come up with some simple tips you should “Know Before You Go”.

1. Know Your Measurements

Knowing your measurements will save you a whole lot of disappointment. This includes but not limited to :

  • Inseam for jeans and trousers
  • Sleeve length
  • Bust Size
  • Hip Width
  • Waist Width

2. Find Stores That Have A Tall Section

It can sometimes be difficult trying to narrow this down since most stores do not cater to non-average height women, but I’ve done the work for us. These stores have a tall section worth looking into. Also, don’t count out higher-end brands either. They sometimes have clothing that will fit us with no problem, but the stores below are more affordable.

  • ASOS
  • GAP
  • LOFT
  • Miss Guided
  • Levi’s
  • American Eagle
  • Ann Taylor
  • Madewell

and much more! So I advise you to do some research on some of these brands and expand from there.

3. Find A Great Tailor

This is by far the most important tip from this list. Having a tailor will take your outfit from blah to glam. When your clothes fit your frame properly it just adds so much class to your look. This goes for average height women and tall women. Think about when a man has a custom suit made, it’s tailored to his body only. Since no one person is built the same having a tailor to custom your clothes specifically for your body is a must.

4. Carry A Measuring Tape

It sounds strange but let’s be honest, you can find jeans but when it comes to shirts, blouses, and blazers most brands don’t put the measurements in detail as far as the length of the sleeve. So my tip would be to carry a small measuring tape where ever you go. Just pull it and measure in the dressing room and get to measuring. So if you are kind of weirded out by actually carrying it trust me It will save you in the long run.

5. Always Try On Clothes

Trying on clothes is something we all hate, but it’s a must. This simple step will eliminate the daunting task of returning items back to a store in the long run. When you do have the time to go into the actual department store it’s actually very beneficial. You have the option to try on multiple sizes, colors, and different items without purchasing a single piece which eliminates returning them if they do not fit. Some clothes may look like they are going to fit, but it ultimately balls down to where the clothes are made and the material. So always try on any clothing you plan on purchasing from an actual store. Trust me it’s a smart move!

6. Online Shopping

Ahh… so much fun right? so easy to just “ADD To CART” and continue to payment, but the reality of it is, it’s actually harder when it comes to buying clothes online since you can’t physically try them on before you purchase them. Unless it’s a brand you’re used to wearing, but you still risk the chance of it not fitting since the items aren’t custom for your body, and brands can easily change the material and fit at any time. So my recommendation is to always buy two sizes of each item especially if it’s a new brand.

7. Shop Your Closet

Shopping in your closet is actually something you should get into the routine of doing before each season. We often say ” We don’t have anything to wear” while staring into a closet full of clothes lol. This can only mean a few things, you either need to purge your closet, stop sale shopping, stop impulse shopping or stop taking hand me downs because you just don’t know how to say no. Once you’ve shopped your closet you most likely will turn an old outfit into something new which in turn will put off your impulse shopping until you actually really need something.

These tips will make your shopping day so much more eventful and fun.
