As a tall woman with pretty long arms and legs, most blazers and trousers do not fit as well as I would like them. So, tailoring is my best friend.
What I love most about a tailor is that they make the clothes fit my body to a tee. It’s the golden ticket to having clothes look amazing on you.
I would recommend other tall women to do is, find at least five great tailors in your neighborhood and try each one out. See who listens to your style needs and go with the best choice. The goal is to ensure each item is uniquely fit for your frame.
Things you can and should have tailored if you’re 5’9 & up:
BLAZERS
Blazers are the one thing I get tailored because they can elevate your look quickly. I usually for altering the sleeves to take in the sides for a tailored looked.
JACKETS
Jackets are the same as blazers, where you can alter to your liking. You can also add patches and other bells and whistles if they are too short, so your options are endless.
Jeans/Trousers
Here is where you can have your waist tailed if you’re going for a pair of jeans or trousers that are loose, you can size up, and tailor the waist, to achieve the exact look you want.
Shirts
Typically you would have your button-up shirts tailored more than a sweater or other tops. So, stick with tailoring your shirts and blouses as opposed to trying to alter a sweater or knitwear.
Altering your clothes can be the best thing to happen to clothes that don’t fit you well because most designers do not create and design based on your body type, but instead on that model’s body type, which isn’t average.
Things I’ve had a tailor work their magic on were blazers, jeans, dresses, and coats. Those are the things I seem to have the most trouble with when shopping. Either the sleeves are too short, or the pants aren’t long enough, but I always make due and get creative.
So ladies, find a good tailor in your area and become friends. So, they know what you like and don’t like when taking things to be altered.
